Frankie Dettori has been dropped by trainer John Gosden this weekend, as bookmakers install Hollie Doyle as the odds-on favourite to take over as the Gosden's retained jockey.
Although Inspiral ran out an impressive winner of the Coronation Stakes, Royal Ascot 2022 couldn't have gone much worse for Frankie Dettori and the Gosden's.

John Gosden and owner, Bjorn Nielsen were both openly critical of the ride Dettori gave Stradivarius in the Gold Cup. That public dressing-down came 24 hours after the Lord North debacle in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, where Dettori failed to remove his mount's hood in time, leaving the stalls some ten lengths behind the rest of the field.

The enigmatic Italian even managed to get 2/5 favourite, Reach For The Moon beaten in the Hampton Court Stakes, meaning Dettori ended Royal Ascot with just one winner and five placed efforts from his 22 rides.

Ripples were then sent through the horse racing world when the weekend declarations were revealed on Thursday. Dettori's name only appeared next to Ralph Beckett's Lezoo - owned by Frankie's great friend, Mark Chan - with James Doyle and Rab Havlin partnering the Gosden's three entrants at Newmarket on Saturday.

Neither Dettori nor the Gosden's have been available to comment, as of Friday morning. Frankie's racing manager, Peter Burrell did speak to the Racing Post on Thursday evening and revealed his client is "in the dark as much as anyone else."

"Frankie rang up the Gosden office this morning to discuss riding plans for the weekend, as he usually does, but didn't get a call back." Burrell claims. "We're in the dark as much as anyone else, which is a strange position to be in."

"We only have questions, not answers. We know absolutely nothing, so we'll have to put the jigsaw together ourselves. Whatever John and Thady have done, we'll all have to move on with."

Meanwhile, bookmakers Betfair were quick to install Hollie Doyle as the 4/11 favourite to take over from Dettori as the Gosden's number one rider.

John Gosden was extremely complimentary of Doyle leading into the Oaks, likening her to the great American jockey Julie Krone. Hollie rode her first Classic winner in France last weekend, guiding the Gosden's Nashwa to victory in the Prix de Diane, and she seems like the most natural successor if Dettori and the Gosden's were to part company for good.
