Racing Questions

How did you get into racing?

When I was a child, I would go to my Grandad’s house straight from school. On the hour (when I was there – 4pm), he would listen to the horse racing results that were relayed on BBC Radio 2. I wasn’t allowed to make a sound as soon as the announcer said, “And the latest horse racing results are…”

The whole thing fascinated me, and I soon began to have 10p bets that my Grandad would actually place for me, alongside his own, at the local bookies.

What achievement are you proudest of in your career in racing?

Napping and punting on Mon Mome over a long series of months to win my favourite jumps race – the Aintree Grand National.

What's your first racing memory?

Going along to Haydock Park as a youngster and seeing the cheery face of Greville Starkey coming back in after a winner.

Who is your favourite horse of all time?

It’s a split decision between Chaplins Club and West Tip.

What's your favourite race on the calendar?

Unquestionably the Grand National.

What do you think is the most underrated race meeting or festival?

Some people aren’t overly fond of Chester due to the nature of the track, but I reckon their May Festival offers some of the best three days of early summer Flat action.

When studying the form of a race, what do you pay most attention to?

There are so many factors involved in studying form, but for me, distance, stamina and the going are key.

What's your most painful punting story?

To be honest, there have been so many down the years that they have all become much of a blur. I do remember shouting out an expletive, however, when I witnessed Sunnyhillboy getting nutted on the line by Neptune Collonges in the 2012 Grand National.

Which figure in racing, past or present, would you love to meet?

Probably Henry Cecil. He appeared to have a nice, humble aura about him.

If you could make one change to the Cheltenham Festival, what would it be?

I would most definitely put it back to three days again and make EVERY race a championship race.

Quickfire Five

Apart from racing, what's your favourite sport?

Crown green bowls – I’ve been playing for a total of 40 years now.

Which racecourse that you've been to serves the best food?

You can’t go far wrong at York for a good meal.

What's your favourite drink to have during a day at the races?

A Guinness is always nice on the palate.

What's your favourite music album of all time?

Songs from the Big Chair by Tears for Fears.

What's your favourite sandwich?

You can’t beat the traditional classic of cheese and tomato.
