2023 Nassau Stakes Tips
Two-thirds of the Nassau Stakes run over the past 30 years have been won by three-year-olds, so it's no surprise to see this season's stand-out three-year-old filly, Blue Rose Cen topping the betting.
French racing is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance this season and it's brilliant to see Blue Rose Cen make the trip over to Britain. Softer ground will certainly suit Christopher Head's raider, as will an inside draw in stall one, considering Aurelien Lemaitre likes to have his mount prominent throughout.
There are, however, a couple of reasons why I'm hesitant to back the favourite at close to even money. Blue Rose Cen has never travelled before and she's never run against older fillies. I'm also struggling to work out whether Never Ending Story's - a four-length runner-up in the Prix de Diane - price of 40/1 is a reflection of Blue Rose Cen's superiority in that Group One, or an illustration of how weak this year's crop of three-year-olds fillies are.
Defending champion, Nashwa looked back to her very best when winning the Falmouth Stakes. John Gosden said that his filly had improved massively for her run in the Hoppings Stakes, where she was narrowly beaten by Al Husn. Given that progression, I can't see Roger Varian's filly confirming the Newcastle placing with Nashwa.
Then there's ABOVE THE CURVE, who's three-year-old form ties in very closely with Nashwa and, at the prices, Joseph O'Brien's filly appeals most to me from a betting standpoint.
Having won the Prix Saint Alary, Above The Curve crossed the line just a short neck behind Nashwa when both were beaten in the Prix l'Opera. O'Brien's filly then comfortably saw off her rival in the Prix Corrida back in May - the form of which was boosted when runner-up Mqse De Sevigne won the Prix Rothschild at Deauville last weekend.
Ryan Moore's mount paid the price for sitting close to a fairly fast pace in the Pretty Polly Stakes last time out, where Above The Curve was relegated to third by the fast-finishing Via Sistina and Stay Well, who'd both been held up. Slower ground conditions will certainly be to Above The Curve's liking, as will the characteristics of the track at Goodwood, given her fine form around similar tracks in France.
