2025 1000 Guineas Tips - Saeed's outsider worth a second look in Sunday's Classic
The 2025 1000 Guineas at Newmarket promises an exciting clash among three-year-old fillies. Desert Flower and Lake Victoria are the frontrunners, but much attention is on Elwateen as a potential value bet. Trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, Elwateen impressed in her debut and, despite being less experienced, is beautifully bred and well-positioned. With Jim Crowley as the jockey and a strategic draw, she poses a significant challenge. For those interested in watching the action live, streaming options are available.

Desert Flower won all of her four starts, and was last seen powering to a superb victory in the Fillies' Mile here at Newmarket. Lake Victoria made it four wins from four starts when landing the Cheveley Park Stakes, before proving her stamina with a third Group One triumph in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf.
Ger Lyon's raider, Red Letter finished an unlucky fourth behind Lake Victoria in the Moyglare Stakes last term and she's the only other filly available at a single-figure price. Duty First jumped into Classic contention with an impressive victory in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury, after which she was cut into 16/1 for Sunday's main event.
Hey Boo followed Duty First home at Newbury and she'll represent Jack Channon on Sunday. Remaat steps up to a mile, following a staying-on third behind Zanzoun in the Nell Gwyn Stakes here at Newmarket.
Ollie Sangster runs beaten Fred Darling favourite Simmering, along with May Hill and Oh So Sharp Stakes third Flight. Chantilly Lace and Elwateen also feature in the field, having won nicely on their sole juvenile starts last season.
2025 1000 Guineas Tips
If I had to pick between the two market leaders, I'd side with Desert Flower over Lake Victoria, despite a poor draw in stall one. Red Letter is a likeable filly too, but - at 5/1 - she hardly represents better value than either of the favourites.
One who intrigues me is ELWATEEN (33/1). Saeed Bin Suroor knows exactly what it takes to win the 1000 Guineas, having saddled the winner on three occasions, so for him to throw this once-raced daughter of Dubawi into this Classic shows the high regard in which she's held.
Elwateen looked set to settle for second on her sole start at Kempton last August, as market rival Orchid sprinted into the lead. The favourite, however, found a second wind in the closing stages, quickly cutting the leader's advantage before forging a length clear in the final 50 yards.
Jim Crowley's mount is by a top sire in Dubawi. She's also the first foal out of a Teofilo dam who won the Prix Saint Alary and the Prix de la Nonette before a fourth-place finish in the Prix de l'Opera on her sixth and final career start.
Bin Suroor won't have been displeased by a low draw in stall three, especially given Desert Flower will want to get into contention from an even lower stall, meaning Elwateen could track her into contention. It's a risk backing her, given her lack of experience, but Elwateen is beautifully bred and - the two market leaders aside - this isn't a particularly strong renewal of this fabled Classic.
