The big betting race on Saturday will be the Cesarewitch Handicap. This 18-furlong heritage handicap boasts a long, storied history, having first been staged at Newmarket back in 1839 and many popular horses have claimed victory on the Rowley Mile.

Here's our free guide to the 2023 Cesarewitch, including the latest odds, key trends and our best betting tips.

2023 Cesarewitch Handicap Trends

  • 15 of the last 16 winners had previously won over at least 2m (flat or hurdles)
  • 15 of the last 16 winners had won on the ground
  • 14 of the last 16 winners did not win last time out
  • 14 of the last 16 winners carried 9-04 or less
  • 13 of the last 16 winners were aged between 4 and 7
  • 13 of the last 16 winners had run within the last 50 days
  • 12 of the last 16 winners had run at least four times that year
  • 12 of the last 16 winners were trained by National Hunt or dual-purpose trainers
  • 11 of the last 16 winners were rated between 84 and 94
  • 10 of the last 16 winners had won that year

As the fourth trend in the list above illustrates, it's incredibly hard to carry a lot of weight to victory in this historic handicap. Only six horses have won carrying more than 9-04 since 1980 and almost 70% of the winners this century have carried 8-13 or less.

The booking of Ryan Moore further enhanced Pied Piper's already strong claims. Seven of the last nine winners of the Cesarewitch returned an SP of 10/1 or shorter and I'd be amazed if Gordon Elliott's raider didn't start as the short-priced favourite.

2023 Cesarewitch Ante-Post Tip - Typewriter

It's been over two years since TYPEWRITER (33/1) last tasted victory. However, Andrew Balding's filly has shown enough this season to suggest that she's capable of landing a big handicap off her current mark.

Typewriter finished a very close fourth in the Jorvik Handicap at York in May before running a solid race to place fourth in the Bronte Cup just ten days later. Oisin Murphy's mount was then very slowly away in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, but looked to be coming with a dangerous challenge entering the straight, only to run out of steam in the closing stages of that grueling contest.

Having failed to get involved in the Goodwood Handicap after another sluggish start, Balding gave his four-year-old a 50-day break. Typewriter returned to action at Goodwood at the end of September and ran an excellent race to finish third, giving ten and 12 pounds to the two talented fillies who finished ahead of her.

Typewriter might not have quite seen out 2m5½f at Royal Ascot, but she still only finished half-a-length adrift of last year's Cesarewitch winner, Run For Oscar that day, so she's clearly not lacking in stamina. 2m2f should be ideal and Balding won't be worried about the ground, as Typewriter has run well on both good-to-firm and soft this season.

2023 Cesarewitch Tip 2 - Jesse Evans

Now that the field has been confirmed, I'm keen to have a punt on JESSE EVANS (12/1). Noel Meade's seven-year-old has been in fantastic form this summer/autumn, losing out by just a head to Zarak The Brave in the Galway Hurdle, before running out an impressive winner of the Kingdom Gold Cup on the flat at Killarney.

Jesse Evans took his flat form to a new level in the Irish version of the Cesarewitch last month, finishing a very close fourth behind Magellan Strait. Some will be quick to crab that form, given that the winner went off at 150/1, but a former Chester Cup winner and the reigning Queen Alexandra Stakes champion finished second and third, and Meade's charge was also involved in that blanket finish.

Rated 150 over hurdles, Jesse Evans is due to go up to a flat mark of 101 after that run at the Curragh. As the entries for the Cesarewitch came out prior to that contest, Meade's star will run off the same mark of 95 on Saturday and Oisin Orr - who's no stranger to big-race success at this meeting - has been booked to take the ride.

Verdict

Typewriter was our ante-post tip for the 2023 Cesarewitch at 33/1. We've also backed Jesse Evans at 12/1 after the field was confirmed.
