Flemington stages a massive 10-race card on Saturday, October 4, with the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes the headline act. The Bart Cummings, Danehill Stakes and Edward Manifold Stakes are also among the spring features on the program.
Our preview delivers race-by-race Australian racing tips and selections across the card.
Flemington Tips October 4
Race 1 - 12:25PM TAB We're On Tips (1200m)
12. She’s An Artist faded late when fourth first-up as an odds-on favourite. A slow recovery was noted post-race and her condition gave out late after sitting on a strong tempo, so there were some reasons for the defeat. She was super impressive when opening her career with back-to-back wins before a second as a $1.30 favourite behind Bridal Waltz, who won a Group 3 at her next attempt.
From the same form race, 10. Stoli Bolli continues to knock on the door, recording three placings from as many attempts this prep. He’s suited back up to 1200m, and his best effort in his first campaign also came fourth-up at this trip.
Resuming 14. Acid Wash is lightly raced and looks progressive. He overcame trouble to win fresh last campaign and should arguably have won his only prior straight-track attempt.
At monster odds, 1. Celsius Star comes back in grade. He covered ground at The Valley last week and wasn’t terrible fresh in Group 3 company.
Plenty of hopes in the opener, but a fit and talented filly like She’s An Artist has claims if she can bounce back.
Selections: 12,10,14,1.
Race 2 - 12:55PM Darley Maribyrnong Trial Stakes Tips (1000m)
The Maribyrnong Trial is always difficult with babies debuting up the straight, and it’s often a race where future stallion credentials start to build.
9. One Day At A Time is by Bivouac, who is beginning to make an impact as a sire with some progressive early winners and Group 1 success through Beiwacht in the Golden Rose. This filly won a slick 800m heat here on September 25 and looked professional in doing so.
6. Rich On Bubbles caught the eye in his first jump-out at Pakenham, working home stylishly under his own steam. He was then well held here, but perhaps connections backed off knowing what they had. Importantly, he gets Blake Shinn aboard.
5. Knurl has won both Flemington workouts, looking the more furnished in his latest piece compared to 10. Rubare, who was still raw but has talent.
These early-season juvenile races are unpredictable, but trial work has at least given punters a glimpse at what might be in store.
Selections: 9,6,5,10.
Race 3 - 1:30PM Super Impose Stakes Tips (1800m)
The Super Impose Stakes often produces Victoria Derby contenders, with past winners including Riff Rocket, Warning, Extra Brut and Polanski.
2. Miewa sits on the second line of Derby betting and is still learning but has obvious ability. The son of Maurice scored a confidence-boosting win at Moonee Valley and looks to have the class that few of these possess. He continues to improve with each run and his staying pedigree suggests the rise to 1800m is only going to bring out more.
11. Arabian Prince was slow away on debut but hit the line when balanced late, finishing close and giving the impression he’d have won with a few more strides. A half-brother to Royal Crown (2400m Listed winner), he looks a progressive stayer, but hasn’t been sighted since that July 19 debut.
4. Options lost his unbeaten record when bumped at a key stage in the Derby Trial. He’s no world-beater but honest, with a fitness edge on many here.
3. Officiate represents the Waller-McDonald combination and continues to progress. He arrives off a Canterbury maiden win over 1550m and now gets blinkers.
Selections: 2,11,4,3.
Race 4 - 2:05PM TAB Edward Manifold Stakes Tips (1600m)
5. Just A Journey beat older rivals when taking out a BM72 in Sydney second-up, following a brave fresh run when sticking on after a tough duel. She’s shown toughness before and brings a competitive edge to what looks a modest Manifold edition.
9. Mating Call backs up quickly from Sandown, where she covered ground but kept fighting on. Her debut win hinted at above-average ability and she may be progressive.
4. Yum was suited by the tempo in the Jim Moloney at Caulfield but still finished off stylishly to score. 2. Zainy ran third there after being unlucky the start prior. While the form out of that race is still taking shape, both bring the right profile to be competitive here.
This isn’t the deepest edition of the Manifold, with a number of lightly raced fillies still developing, and the market may shift significantly late.
Selections: 5,9,4,2.
Race 5 - 2:40PM Kirin Ichiban Rose of Kingston Stakes Tips (1400m)
4. On Display showed quality at the end of autumn, finishing an unlucky second at big odds in the Group 2 Queen Of The South before rebounding with a dominant Adelaide Guineas win.
She was sharp fresh in August before failing here over this trip, though she was cramped for room and baulked when trying to push through. She’s capable of hitting back, but the market has priced her to do so.
9. Movin Out has been rerouted to Melbourne after being scratched from Randwick. James McDonald rides, and her first-up run was better than it looked after she was forced back early (sleepy ride) in a race dominated by leaders. She looks well placed again in mares grade.
7. Roll On High isn’t the most reliable but has talent. She gets back to her pet trip of 1400m and adds winkers after a fair return at Caulfield.
2. Miraval Rose improved sharply second-up to win at Caulfield. She had run well fresh behind Angel Capital and looks well placed again in mares grade.
Selections: 4,9,7,2.
Race 6 - 3:15PM Danehill Stakes Tips (1100m)
The Danehill Stakes can be a strong guide to the early season three-year-old sprinters. Giga Kick won the race in 2022 before taking out The Everest two weeks later, while other notable past winners include Catchy, Rich Enuff, Snitzerland, Sepoy and the champion Black Caviar.
6. Rosberg lived up to the hype on debut at Moonee Valley, putting away a handy field and stamping himself as one to follow. He’s since shortened in Coolmore markets and looks a colt with real upside. He now faces a sterner test up the Flemington straight, but had a recent look here in a quiet jump-out and comes off a Listed win where the form has stood up.
1. Tentyris ran second in that Flemington heat and has strong credentials himself. A Dead-Heat winner here at start two, he proved that was no fluke when winning the Blue Diamond. He also attacked the line strongly in Sydney last time, confirming his class.
4. Legacy Bound chases four straight wins, having handled the straight-track fresh, albeit only just. He’ll find this tougher but remains unbeaten and deserves respect.
9. Inkaruna caught the eye late first-up and looks suited by the extra 100m.
Selections: 6,1,4,9.
Race 7 - 3:50PM The Lexus Bart Cummings Tips (2520m)
A strong edition of The Bart Cummings with two key Melbourne Cup chances in Revelare and Gilded Water heading markets as the only runners under double figures.
2. Revelare already has a Melbourne Cup ticket in hand, while 15. Gilded Water must win here to secure his. The Maher-trained import also gets in 5kg lighter than Revelare, which could be telling over the trip.
The rest may struggle to match that pair, but 3. Asterix brings knockout claims. His second-up effort was sound from an impossible position and he’ll relish extra ground.
New Zealand stayer 13. Trav also commands respect. An Auckland Cup winner, he’s been ticking over nicely at home and looks well suited rising in distance.
The Cup path is front and centre here, with the winner guaranteed a golden ticket to the first Tuesday in November.
Selections: 15,2,3,13.
Race 8 - 4:25PM TAB Turnbull Stakes Tips (2000m)
4. Via Sistina wasn’t suited in the Makybe Diva, a tempo-controlled affair by Mr Brightside. She arrived there off a first-up Winx Stakes victory and was never in a position to threaten second-up. The Turnbull was her launching pad last spring before she went on to Cox Plate glory, and her 2000m record under Chris Waller is exceptional.
She has six wins from seven starts at the trip in Australia, including the Cox Plate at 2040m. The only defeat came when runner-up to Pride Of Jenni in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, so her credentials at this distance are unmatched.
1. Antino now gets to his target trip and has the right platform. He was sharp third-up last prep when winning the Doomben Cup over 2000m and looks set to peak again. His first two runs this spring were solid in unsuitable set-ups, and Blake Shinn takes the reins from a good draw.
3. Sir Delius continues to build nicely and was tough winning the Underwood. He secured a Melbourne Cup ticket in March and is still on an upward curve, making him a major player again.
12. Deakin is lightly raced and has shown glimpses of talent. He can take another step forward here, and at a big price, he could be the value for exotics.
Selections: 4,1,3,12.
Race 9 - 5:05PM Gilgai Stakes Tips (1200m)
The Gilgai is a competitive sprint field with a great honour roll of winners that includes Private Eye, Sunlight, The Quarterback, Chautauqua, Hay List and All Silent.
At each-way odds, 7. Royal Insignia is worth thought. He had excuses first-up at Caulfield when in the worst part of the track and then produced the fastest last 200m in the Bobbie Lewis over this trip. He can benefit off his first straight-track attempt.
8. Nadal resumes with James McDonald aboard and shapes as a genuine spring X-factor. He’s had setbacks but has always been well regarded and is capable fresh.
1. War Machine resumes off a hat-trick through the Stradbroke, showing big improvement over autumn and winter. He’s talented but has a big weight here and is against some handy sprinters.
4. West Star crosses from WA and brings untapped potential. This is a sharp rise in class but he adds intrigue.
Selections: 7,8,1,4.
Race 10 - 5:40PM Paris Lane Stakes Tips (1400m)
3. Cafe Millenium looks to have found his niche at 1400m. He was a dominant winner here last start, with runner-up Transatlantic almost beating Evaporate at Group 3 level last week. He’s aiming for a hat-trick and the August 23 Adelaide win also stacked up, with second-placed Splash Back going on to win a Group 2 at The Valley last Friday night.
12. Shadizi was an eye-catcher at big odds first-up in Sydney, where there was no intent. He drops 4kg, gets a senior rider and steps to a more suitable trip.
11. Enxuto is a possible smokey. He found 1200m too sharp fresh but boxed on. Four of his last five wins have been between 1400m–1600m, including two at Flemington.
9. Media World was plain fresh but can improve second-up back at his preferred trip. He’s been well found in early markets despite that run.
Plenty of different form lines converge here, and late betting moves could tell the story.
Selections: 3,12,11,9.
