2026 2000 Guineas News - Quotes From Connections

Aidan O'Brien (Gstaad)

Gstaad is proven on the quicker ground and he ran well over the track in the Dewhurst last year.

He worked this morning (Wednesday) and we were very happy. Everything has been very good.

George Boughey (Bow Echo)

He just didn’t look like anywhere near the finished article last year and he’s still got a way to go but, in my opinion, he looks much more the horse that we would hope he’d look like now. He’s maturing and he’s only going to mature through the summer.

It’s a 2000 Guineas. It’s a high-quality field with some good horses in there. We wake up every morning and hope that the horse is in good condition because we know how things can happen so quickly.

It’s been the trials season and there will be horses who will be improving for the run. We are pretty happy with where we were. We were never going to trial the horse and he’s in as good a condition as we could have him.

He’s been away this year. He went to Kempton to gallop and galloped on the racecourse here in Newmarket. We got his blood up a couple of times – I just didn’t need to trial him and we haven’t.

It’s a very open race in behind with horses who are improving and we fear everyone, but I wouldn’t swap him.

Charlie Appleby (Distant Storm and King's Trail)

Both Distant Storm and King’s Trail go into the race in great shape. Distant Storm has the Dewhurst form, which is always important in the Guineas, and I was pleased with what we saw from his racecourse gallop at the Craven meeting. He has done well since and, based on his two-year-old form, you would hope that he would be right there at the finish.

King’s Trail also pleased in his racecourse gallop, although his lack of experience on turf is the great unknown, especially jumping up from conditions races to G1 company. I have been very happy with his work at home, while he is the one in the field probably open to the most improvement.

It is always a great race to be part of and I’m looking forward to seeing how we get on with two solid contenders.

Ted Voute (Racing manager for Oxagon's owners)

He doesn’t seem to have got as much credit as I thought he would for a Craven winner going into the Guineas. I think it was said at the time it’s been a long time since a Craven winner has won the Guineas and I guess Mr Gosden hasn’t had a Guineas winner. Maybe that’s what the betting public are thinking.

He won the Craven very well, he couldn’t have done it better and I think we’ll be there or thereabouts. We’ll see how Aidan’s (O’Brien) have come through the winter and Bow Echo is obviously a big danger, but we’ll see what happens.

Roger Varian (Avicenna)

He’s just coming to hand nicely now and has had a good winter and provided the next fortnight goes to plan, it’s likely he’ll start in either a Craven or a Greenham and put his credentials on the line.

He needs a bit more practice and he’s only had the two starts so we need to get a measure of his potential.

Philip Robinson (Racing manager for Needle Match's owners)

We were very pleased with his run at Newbury and if he goes for the 2000 Guineas – which the owner seems keen to do – the extra furlong will suit him.

He was certainly doing his best work in the last 100 yards in the Greenham and the mile for him will be no problem at all.

Let’s hope he’s still unexposed and he’s done nothing wrong at all in his two starts. He’ll definitely benefit from his experience at Newbury and it was an encouraging run.

Off that the owner is quite keen to go to Newmarket and I’m not saying he’ll be a live chance, but he’ll run a race in the 2000 Guineas.

It’s an open looking Guineas and there’s only one of them. He’s been quite lucky in Classics up to now so it will be interesting to see how he gets on.

Karl Burke (Alparslan)

He didn't really like the undulations when he went to Newmarket for the Dewhurst, although that could just have been two-year-old immaturity. It was his third quickish run and he came back sore, so the track might not be an issue but it is a question mark.

Clifford said he is a big, heavy, gawky horse so whether racing round a bend at Longchamp would be his cup of tea I don't know and the Curragh might suit him well having won there. But he does have time to go to both the English and Irish if we wanted to.

I'm sure there is another gear, the trip (mile) would be the question mark, but I think he's answered 90 per cent of that question here today. It would give me a lot of hope.

Fozzy Stack (Thesecretadversary)

We are very happy with him and the plan at the minute is to go to Newmarket for the 2,000 Guineas.

There were excuses for his run in Canada (Woodbine, last September) but he had previously won well at Tipperary last August when he beat a horse (Brussels) who later finished second in both the Middle Park Stakes and at the Breeders Cup, so the form is in the book.

He did it well at Leopardstown the last day and we've been happy with him since.

He finished second on fast ground in the Chesham Stakes last year so ground should be fine. It will be interesting to see how he runs in Newmarket and it'll tell us where we stand for the rest of the year. Seamie Heffernan will again ride him.

Jim Boyle (Into The Sky)

He won like a 1/10 shot on his debut, but 80/1 in a maiden would be a usual price for one of mine as we are not prolific with first time out two-year-old winners as we wouldn’t have too many that would be sharp enough to win first time out, but we were very hopeful that he was good.

He came alive on the racecourse as at home he is a good work horse, but he is not an outstanding work horse.

There has been a lot of talk about barrier trials recently and I took him to one trial at Lingfield about three weeks before he first ran and he came last. It didn’t dent our confidence in him as it was used as a learning tool to educate him. If anyone would have watched the barrier trial he would have gone off 150/1!

Niall Keating (Co-owner of Padraig Dawn)

Goodness me, not only is it exciting with the Guineas but we’ve also entered him into the St James’s Palace at Ascot.

We’re very confident in his current form. Charlie’s happy and we made the decision to supplement based on where we see him tracking this year.

It’s wide open. We’ve seen what he’s done in his first two races so why not? We’ve only got one chance at it. I’m happy, I’m excited more than anything because I do genuinely believe that something’s going to happen on Saturday and I think Charlie Pike could potentially be the youngest Guineas trainer after this weekend.

If we’d had another 10 metres (at Newcastle) we would have won. We had Charlie’s first win and Padraig Dawn is actually named after my parents so it’s a real special time for me to be involved.
