Another brilliant Glorious Goodwood meeting gets underway on Tuesday. The card on day one is headlined by the Group One Goodwood Cup, a race that has been won by all of flat racing's most famous stayers and the betting for this year's renewal is dominated by a former winner.

2024 Goodwood Cup Tips - Al Qareem
There's no doubt that Kyprios is the most likely winner of Tuesday's Goodwood Cup. Aidan O'Brien's star has been back to his best this term, winning on all three starts, and Tuesday's feature is weaker than both the Ascot Gold Cup and the superb renewal of the Goodwood Cup that he won in 2022.
At 4/7, the favourite isn't a punting proposition, so we'll have to look for an alternative plan to try and make some profit. Sweet William and Coltrane can be backed at 9/4 in the "betting without Kyprios" special market, with Gregory a little further adrift at 7/2.
The going at Goodwood is currently described as good-to-soft, which would suit Sweet William and former winner, Trueshan. However, there's nothing but blue skies and sunshine in the forecast throughout Glorious Goodwood, and the chances of any soft featuring in the going come 3:35pm on Tuesday seem remote.
The one who interests me most at the prices is AL QAREEM (22/1), who has consistently run up to a high level over 12 and 14 furlongs for the past 18 months.
Karl Burke's star beat Bluestocking in the Stand Cup at Chester in September, before defeating Israr in the Cumberland Lodge at Ascot. Following a narrow defeat to Hamish on his reappearance at Newbury, Al Qareem was a little disappointing on his next two starts, but bounced back with a solid effort behind Alsakib in the recent Silver Cup Stakes at York.
Al Qareem has only run over two miles once, finishing 11th in the Dubai World Cup during an illness-ravaged trip to the Middle East in 2023. Clifford Lee's mount had won over 1m7f in France before heading out to the UAE and that runner-up finish at York earlier this month suggested that he's ready to return to this testing trip.
Quick ground would be a worry for Burke, who has only run his star on good or softer in recent times. If allowed to take his chance, then Al Qareem could have his own way out in front - just like Quickthorn did 12 months ago.

Verdict
Outside of Kyprios, the rest of the current staying division is much of a muchness, and this could present Al Qareem with a good opportunity to challenge in a Group One.
With only two paid places available, and each-way bet at 22/1 is risky. I'd rather back Al Qareem at 9/1 in the "betting without Kyprios" special market.
