The Caulfield Cup is the world's richest 2400m handicap and is one of Australia's three premier spring races, with the 2023 edition set to be another memorable affair on Saturday.

This $5 million major draws both local and international stars, and the 2023 edition is no exception, with Japanese and European visitors taking on acceptances from most of the leading Australian yards.

Off a brilliant last-start Turnbull Stakes win, Gold Trip is the current favourite. But where does the value lie in the 2023 Caulfield Cup?

2023 Caulfield Cup Tips

Best Bet - Without A Fight

Anthony & Sam Freedman opted to send the seven-year-old straight to the Caulfield Cup after his slashing Underwood Stakes return, having recorded the fastest closing sectionals of that Group 1.

That 1800m feature is a strong form race, with two subsequent Group 1 winners produced from the Underwood, while Vow And Declare, Lunar Flare and Duais also performed well at their next starts.

Without A Fight couldn't have been more impressive over a short Brisbane winter prep, where the son of Teofilo went back-to-back and was saved for the Melbourne spring after his Q22 romp.

In terms of a lead-up, especially with 2400m in mind, he couldn't be going any better ahead of his target assignment and while it's a strong edition of the Caulfield Cup, he's arguably the safest pick.

Next Best Bet - Breakup

Damian Lane on any horse is worth respecting, but given his success in Japan, along with major wins when combined with Japanese visitors in Australia, his engagement on Breakup is very significant.

Lane partnered the last Japanese horse that contested a Caulfield Cup when Mer De Glace sensationally took out the 2019 edition, albeit that winner (at the time) was more progressive than this entire.

As a seasoned horse who has won a Group race, but is just a rung or so off the elite in Japan, Breakup's profile isn't dissimilar to the resume of Admire Rakti, who won the 2014 Caulfield Cup with 58kg.

Barring his tries against a freak in Equinox, the six-year-old has been holding his form in the world's strongest jurisdiction and his last two wins have come in similar conditions (12 furlongs/anti-clockwise).

Value Bet - Duke De Sessa

A versatile import prepared by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, Duke De Sessa was heavily supported to win the Doncaster Mile in autumn via his Australian debut, but those bets didn't land.

It was still a respectable performance from the five-year-old, who made decent inroads from off the speed after overcoming trouble and spelled after that, he then resumed in the Memsie.

Duke De Sessa wasn't disgraced in that 1400m WFA feature, however, that trip proved too short and then second-up, he contested the Turnbull Stakes, where he was competitive without threatening.

It lacked the flashing light of others, although the tongue tie goes on (which was recommended) and John Allen getting down to 53kg suggests that the Caulfield Cup has been the long-range target.
