2026 Caulfield Cup Tips
2026 Caulfield Cup Best Bet - Cosmic Crusader
The return to firmer ground after a testing track at Flemington a fortnight ago is a query for Cosmic Crusader, who tackles 2400m for the first time but has to be the starting point in the 2026 Caulfield Cup.
The Bob Peters-bred and owned galloper always showed plenty of class in Western Australia and has been remarkably consistent since joining the Andrea Leek stable, opening his Victorian account with victories in the Bletchingly Stakes and P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield before a luckless third in the Memsie Stakes and a runner-up finish behind Birdman in the Underwood Stakes.
He bounced straight back in the Turnbull Stakes, relishing a strong tempo over 2000m and making a meal of his rivals in the finish, with Aeliana and Sir Delius, two of the country's premier middle-distance performers, among those beaten. Last year's Caulfield Cup winner Half Yours was another 6.5 lengths away, making it clearly the standout piece of local form heading into Saturday.
The handicap conditions also bring him right into contention, dropping to 56kg after carrying 59kg at weight-for-age and 58kg under the set weights and penalties conditions of the Turnbull Stakes. Barrier 17 is awkward, although he could jump from 14 if the emergencies come out, and William Pike will have options if another strong tempo develops.
Whether he can stretch his brilliance to 2400m remains the obvious question, but he was dominant over a strongly run ten furlongs last time, isn't poorly treated at the weights and faces what doesn't appear to be the strongest Caulfield Cup field we've seen.
2026 Caulfield Cup Next Best Bet - Wine Dark Sea
International raiders always command respect in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, particularly in an edition that doesn't appear particularly strong, and the Harry Charlton-trained Wine Dark Sea could be the best suited of this year's European visitors.
The lightly raced four-year-old has drawn wide in barrier 19 but possesses enough tactical speed to roll forward under Damian Lane, who famously partnered Japanese visitor Mer De Glace to victory in this race in 2019. That ability to take up a prominent position could prove particularly important around Caulfield.
A son of Ulysses, Wine Dark Sea has enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 campaign with three wins from four starts, culminating in a Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes triumph at Newbury, where he carried 61kg. He drops sharply to 54.5kg on Saturday and his exposed form suggests the 2400m of the Caulfield Cup could prove more suitable than the longer Melbourne Cup journey.
Importantly, he has winning form racing both left- and right-handed and has demonstrated a clear preference for firmer conditions, with all three victories this year coming on good ground and his only defeat on a softer surface. He's a strong, somewhat one-paced galloper who can sustain his effort, the type of English stayer often well suited to these handicaps.
Reports suggest he has settled in well since arriving in Australia, with Australian Bloodstock having specifically targeted this race after acquiring an interest in the progressive gelding. The ownership group deserves plenty of respect with its international recruits, and while the wide barrier presents a challenge, Wine Dark Sea looks one of the better-suited raiders at this distance, a view reflected in the early market.
2026 Caulfield Cup Value Bet - Ohope Wins
The Melbourne Cup over 3200m might ultimately prove an even better target for Ohope Wins, but Chris Waller has the talented mare progressing nicely towards her spring staying assignments, and she makes plenty of appeal at the weights on Saturday.
Her first-up performance on unsuitable ground was well below her best, but there was much more merit in her Makybe Diva Stakes effort after a month between runs and an encouraging jumpout victory. The mile was always going to be too sharp at weight-for-age, although her work through the line suggested she was heading in the right direction.
She then encountered another demanding assignment in the strongly run Turnbull Stakes, finding several proven middle-distance performers too classy over 2000m, while the testing ground may also have taken its toll late. Nevertheless, it was another pass mark from the daughter of Ocean Park, who now reaches a much more suitable 2400m.
Her two previous attempts at the distance have both resulted in Group 1 victories, highlighted by an outstanding New Zealand Oaks success in February when she overcame interference from back in the field to win comfortably. She subsequently rounded out her first preparation for Waller with victory in the Australian Oaks during the autumn.
The switch to handicap conditions is particularly appealing. She carried 56kg in the Turnbull Stakes, receiving just 2kg from Cosmic Crusader and 3kg from Half Yours, but drops to just 51.5kg here, giving her a 4.5kg advantage over Cosmic Crusader and a full 6kg on last year's Caulfield Cup winner.
Jye McNeil takes the ride, and his ability to get the best out of lightweight hopes in major handicaps is another positive. With two Group 1 victories already to her name at 2400m, a high-pressure 2000m contest under her belt and a significant weight pull on her Turnbull Stakes rivals, Ohope Wins ticks plenty of boxes as one of the leading local each-way chances.
