2024 Irish Grand National Tips - Elliott's novice a solid ante-post selection
With the 2024 Irish Grand National approaching, the weights for the Irish equivalent of the famous handicap race have been disclosed. A potentially dangerous contender this year could be Favori De Champdou, trained by Gordon Elliott. Despite a history of less success on left-handed tracks, Favori won a successful Grade Two race at Punchestown and impressed during his novice chasing campaign. Notably, he will be carrying a lighter racing weight of 10-12, which might prove advantageous.
- An ante-post tip for the 2024 Irish Grand National
- This famous handicap takes place at Fairyhouse on Monday 1st April
- We've backed Favori De Champdou at 20/1
With the 2024 edition of the Irish Grand National just weeks away, the weights have been revealed for Ireland's equivalent of this famous handicap.
Today, I've taken a look through the Irish Grand National betting and picked out a dangerous contender who could go off at a much shorter price on Easter Monday.
2024 Irish Grand National Ante-Post Tip - Favori De Champdou
Despite his reputation as an excellent trainer of staying chasers, Gordon Elliott has only managed to win the Irish Grand National once. General Principle returned an SP of 20/1 back in 2018, the same price currently attached to Gordon's leading contender this year, FAVORI DE CHAMPDOU (20/1).
Elliott skipped the Cheltenham Festival with his nine-year-old novice, despite a sparkling Grade Two success at Punchestown earlier in the season. I wasn't expecting Favori De Champdou to run at Cheltenham, as his record going left-handed is fairly shocking for a horse of his calibre.
Favori De Champdou won the Grade Two three-mile novices hurdle at Limerick in December 2022 and impressed during the early stages of his novice chasing campaign. Elliott's star finished a close second behind Affordale Fury on his chasing debut at Galway, before thrashing Sandor Clegane and Flooring Porter to win the Florida Pearl Novices' Chase by 14 lengths.
Ignore his two most recent starts in graded company, which both came around left-handed tracks. If Elliott confirms top-weight Farouk D'alene in the field, then Favori De Champdou will be carrying a lovely racing weight of 10-12 and he looks perfectly suited to this sort of stamina test.
Verdict
Favori De Champdou is our ante-post selection for the 2024 Irish Grand National.
