2023 Irish Grand National Tip 1 - Stumptown
We've seen two six-year-olds win the Irish Grand National since 2011 and Gavin Cromwell's six-year-old STUMPTOWN ticks plenty of boxes when looking for an ideal candidate.
Stumptown went into the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival as the well-backed 7/2 favourite. Barry O'Neill's mount had opened his account over fences at the sixth time of asking at Thurles in January, before bolting up over three miles at Sandown the following month.
Despite the ground going slightly against him, Stumptown ran a screamer at Cheltenham, narrowly losing out to anther possible Irish National rival, Angels Dawn. Despite that narrow defeat, Stumptown has to be regarded as a massively player if he was to get into the final field and early weather forecast suggests that the ground will come up on the good side of soft, which will suit Cromwell's star perfectly.
2023 Irish Grand National Tip 2 - Now Where Or When
Another who could sneak into Monday's feature at the bottom of thr weights is Stuart Crawford's NOW WHERE OR WHEN.
Crawford's eight-year-old made a winning reappearance this season over two miles at Down Royal, before a decent effort when sixth behind The Goffer at the Dublin Racing Festival. Now Where Of When then took on the likes of Kemboy, Vanillier and Carefully Selected in the Bobbyjo Chase here at Fairyhouse and, despite a 30-pound gap in the weights between himself and the more fancied runners, Darragh O'Keeffe's mount ran a blinder to finish just a length-and-a-half behind Kemboy in third.
Now Where Or When has won around Fairyhouse over both hurdles and fences, placing on his other two visits to this venue. Crawford's eight-year-old has only won over two miles so far, which is a slight worry, but Now Where Or When shapes like a stayer and hit the line well over 25-and-a-half furlongs in the Bobbyjo. Decent ground would also be to his advantage.
Verdict
Stumptown and Now Where Or When are our selections in the 2023 Irish Grand National.
