2023 Fairyhouse Gold Cup Runners
Mighty Potter has already claimed Grade One glory over fences here at Fairyhouse, having bolted up in the Drinmore earlier in the season. Gordon Elliott's charge lost his unbeaten record when third at the Cheltenham Festival last time out, but the bookies still make Mighty Potter a warm favourite for Sunday's feature.
The six horses who immediately follow Mighty Potter in the betting are all trained by Willie Mullins. Paul Townend has opted to ride Appreciate It, who finished a place behind the favourite when fourth in the Turners at Cheltenham.
James Du Berlais takes his chance again, having finished sixth behind Stage Star in the Turners. Sir Gerhard and Adamantly Chosen drop back down in trip after disappointing performances in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase. Flame Bearer and Authorized Art will also represent Ireland's Champion Trainer, having skipped the Cheltenham Festival.
Gavin Cromwell's Brides Hill will be getting seven pounds from the geldings ahead of her in the market. Rachel Blackmore rides the final entrant, Noel Meade's Flanking Maneuver.
2023 Fairyhouse Gold Cup Tips
I haven't been particularly impressed with Appreciate It since he went chasing. Sir Gerhard's jumping was patchy on his chasing debut and didn't seem to have improved in that department at Cheltenham. Both clearly have plenty of talent, but at their prices, neither appeals to me.
Mighty Potter is clearly the one to beat. However, at the prices, I'll take a chance on FLAME BEARER, who loves running here at Fairyhouse and produced a career-best display on his most recent start.
Flame Bearer won both of his starts around Fairyhouse over hurdles last season and opened his account for Willie Mullins with a 38-length triumph here over 17 furlongs back in January. Sean O'Keffee's mount entered the Pierce Molony Memorial at Thurles with a point to prove last month, having flopped on his two previous starts, but Mullins' eight-year-old produced an excellent round of jumping to win by 13 easy lengths.
Flame Bearer clocked an RPR of 156 that day, which is just as good as anything that the other Willie Mullins runners have managed over fences thus far. With more improvement likely to come over this longer trip, O'Keeffe's mount holds plenty of appeal at his current each-way price.
Verdict
Flame Bearer finally seems to have found his feet in Willie Mullins' yard and wouldn't have to improve much to get involved in this Grade One. 9/1 is a solid each-way price.
