What is the Lockinge Stakes?
The Lockinge Stakes is one of the most prestigious mile races in the British Flat racing calendar. Run each May at Newbury Racecourse, the Group 1 contest is open to horses aged four and older and is widely viewed as the first major top-level race of the season for established milers. The race is staged over one mile on Newbury’s straight course and often shapes the pecking order for the rest of the European Flat season.
Many outstanding horses have won the Lockinge Stakes over the years, with champions like Frankel, Baaeed and Palace Pier all featuring on the honour roll. Frankel’s dominant victory in the 2012 renewal remains one of the most memorable performances in the race’s history. Winners of the Lockinge often go on to compete in major summer races such as the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
Where is the Lockinge run?
The Lockinge Stakes is run at Newbury racecourse, situated in Berkshire, England.
Which horses will run in the Lockinge Stakes?
The Lockinge Stakes regularly attracts many of the highest-rated milers in training, with proven Group 1 performers often using the Newbury feature as their first major target of the Flat season. The race is open to horses aged four and older, meaning Classic generation stars from the previous campaign often return to compete against established older horses over a mile.
Horses who performed well in races like the Queen Anne Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes during the previous season are commonly aimed at the Lockinge Stakes. Leading contenders from the previous year’s 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas can also make the transition into older-horse company at Newbury, especially if they have already shown top-class form over a mile. Trainers often view the Lockinge as an important stepping stone towards major summer targets such as Royal Ascot.

Lockinge Stakes History
The Lockinge Stakes was introduced to the British flat racing calendar in 1958. The race has always been staged at Newbury racecourse, and it's named in honour of a civil parish found in the Newbury area.
Initially, the Lockinge was open to three-year-olds, as well as older horses. The first edition of the Lockinge Stakes was won by Pall Mall, who has won the 2000 Guineas at Newbury on his previous start. Pall Mall then became the first two-time winner of the Lockinge when he defended his crown the following season.
Welsh Pageant won back-to-back renewals of the Lockinge in 1970 and '71. The only other two-time winner of this historic race is Sir Michael Stoute's Soviet Line, who scored in 1995 and '96.
The legendary Brigadier Gerard won the Lockinge as a four-year-old in 1972. Kris claimed the final big win of his illustrious career by winning the 1980 Lockinge Stakes, 12 years before Ian Balding's Selkirk won his Lockinge in 1992.
It wasn't until 1995 that the Lockinge Stakes was upped to Group One status and closed to three-year-old entrants. Cape Cross, Medicean and Paco Boy all won the Lockinge, and went on to enjoy excellent careers as stallions when their time on the track ended.
Top stars like Canford Cliffs, Farhh and Ribchester won the Lockinge Stakes during the 2010s. In 2012, Frankel kicked off his four-year-old campaign with victory in the Lockinge, before ending his career unbeaten after further victories in the Queen Anne, the Juddmonte International and the Champion Stakes at Ascot.
Sir Michael Stoute is the most successful trainer in the history of the Lockinge. Stoute has saddled eight winners during his career, with his most recent success coming when six-year-old Mustashry won at Newbury in 2019.
The most successful owners in this Group One are Godolphin, who've won the race eight times in total. Lester Piggott has ridden the winner of the Lockinge a record six times, winning aboard Sovereign Path in 1960 and Swing Low 33 years later.
Aidan O'Brien's Rhododendron joined Russian Rhythm and Red Evie on the list of fillies and mares to win the Lockinge when she triumphed in 2018. After the 2020 renewal of the Lockinge was canceled due to Covid-19, John Gosden won his third Lockinge when odds-on favourite, Palace Pier powered to victory at Newbury.
