2025 St Leger Tips - Can Twomey's star take down the Ballyboyle battalion?

The 2025 St Leger, the last Classic of the racing season, will see seven leading three-year-olds compete over 14 furlongs at Doncaster. While Aidan O'Brien's Scandinavia remains the bookmaker's favourite, doubts about the ground and Lambourn's recent poor run suggest vulnerability among his entries. Carmers, who impressed at Royal Ascot and again in the Great Voltigeur, is tipped as the value choice. Proven stamina, versatility in ground, and a solid prep make Carmers the recommended bet for the 2025 St Leger.

The final Classic of the season takes place on the second Saturday in September, as a field of classy three-year-olds do battle in the St Leger. This 14-furlong contest has been won by many talented stayers, and seven quality three-year-olds have been confirmed for this year's renewal.

Here's our free guide to the 2025 St Leger, including our best betting tips.

2025 St Leger Entries

Aidan O'Brien boasts an overwhelming recent record in this Classic and his big gun for this year's renewal will be Scandinavia. O'Brien's three-year-old ran away with the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket, and went on to thrash his elders in the Goodwood Cup next time out.

Epsom Derby winner, Lambourn will also represent O'Brien on Saturday, despite a poor effort in the Great Voltigeur Stakes. Stay True also heads to Doncaster after a fourth-place finish at the Ebor Festival.

Queen's Vase winner, Carmers performed well at York, finishing second behind the classy Pride Of Arras. Andrew Balding's Further returns to his own age group, having beaten his elders in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

Ray Dawson has been confirmed in the saddle of Roger Varian's Rahiebb, who finished a one-paced fourth in the Gordon Stakes after an excellent third behind Carmers at Royal Ascot. Colin Keane rides Tarriance, who was last seen landing the Melrose Handicap at York for Andrew Balding.

2025 St Leger Tips

It could prove to be foolish, given he'll saddle three of the first four in the betting, but I'm going to take Aidan O'Brien on in this year's St Leger.

O'Brien described Scandinavia as a fast ground horse after his win at Goodwood, so Saturday's conditions might not suit. Lambourn ran terribly on his prep-run in the Great Voltigeur, and Stay True didn't stay well enough for me to suggest that this extended distance will bring about further improvement.

CARMERS (9/2) beat Scandinavia, Further and Rahiebb when landing the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot. Paddy Twomey's raider cantered through that 14-furlong contest, hitting the front with two furlongs to travel before holding his rivals at arm's length.

Billy Lee said that the plan has been the St Leger ever since that Group Two triumph. Carmers also took in the Great Voltigeur Stakes as his prep for Doncaster and, again, beat rivals he'll face on Saturday when finishing a length behind impressive winner, Pride Of Arras.

Carmers has never run on ground slower than good during his short career thus far. However, he's by an incredibly versatile sire in Wootton Bassett, and his dam is by the great Sea The Stars. Billy Lee said himself that Carmers is capable of going on all kinds of ground, and this progressive three-year-old has already finished ahead of five of the six rivals he'll face in Saturday's Classic.
