Despite its best efforts, Storm Darragh couldn't take out Sandown's card on Saturday and a classy field took part in the 2024 Tingle Creek Chase.

Jonbon beat Edwardstone and Boothill to win this Grade One 12 months ago and Nicky Henderson's star was odds-on to defend his crown. Edwardstone lined up in opposition again. Boothill was an intended runner too, but Harry Fry and his horses failed to make it to Sandown and he joined Unexpected Party as a non-runner.

Henry De Bromhead was represented by former Triumph Hurdle winner Quilixios. Two of last season's top British novices completed the field, with Haldon Gold Cup winner JPR One and Nigel Twiston-Davies' Master Chewy lining up against Jonbon for the first time.

Jonbon was backed into 4/7 in the minutes before the off and Nico De Boinville was keen to take a handy position aboard the favourite. Nicky Henderson's star jumped the opening flight in second place, with Quilixios cutting out the early running.

Solness was positioned on the inside rail, with Edwardstone widest of all in the second rank. JPR One and Master Chewy were the early backmarkers, but just three lengths separated the field as they entered the first bend.

Despite an error at the second flight, Jonbon soon found his rhythm, jumping upside Quilixios on a couple of occasions. Solness wasn't particularly fluent but was jumping better than Master Chewy, who crashed out at the fifth flight.

Edwardstone took a tumble at the final railway fence, as Jonbon tried to establish a clear lead. Approaching the third last, Solness and JPR One were being pushed along, and the odds-in favourite opened up on the approach to the second-last.

Two excellent jumps at the final two flights were enough to seal victory for Jonbon, who retained his Tingle Creek crown with an impressive six-length victory. Quilixios plugged on well for second, having attempted to hang with the favourite throughout.

JPR One warmed to his task well and finished a clear third ahead of Solness. Master Chewy and Edwardstone were up quickly, with both horses and riders appearing to be unscathed.

Jonbon was immediately cut into favouritism for the 2025 Champion Chase. Most bookmakers cut Henderson's star chaser into 5/2 to win at Cheltenham, with Coral now offering the top price of 3/1.
