The 2026 Betfair Chase, a renowned horse racing event, is scheduled for November 21 at Haydock Park. This Grade One National Hunt race is a critical early-season test for long-distance chasers and serves as a major indicator for subsequent races like the King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Grey Dawning, the 2025 winner, might defend his crown. The race will be broadcast on ITV and RacingTV, with streaming available through bet365. When is the 2026 Betfair Chase?

The 2026 Betfair Chase will be run at Haydock racecourse on Saturday 21st November 2026.

What is the Betfair Chase?

The Betfair Chase is a prestigious Grade One National Hunt race held at Haydock Park each November. It’s one of the first major staying chases of the season and regularly attracts some of the best long-distance chasers in training. Run over 3 miles 1½ furlongs (25½ furlongs), the race tests a horse’s stamina, jumping ability, and early-season fitness.

Because of its high status and timing in the jumps calendar, the Betfair Chase is often used as a key pointer to other major winter targets. Horses who shine here frequently progress to top-level contests such as the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and later the Cheltenham Gold Cup, making the Betfair Chase an important stepping stone on the road to spring festival glory.

Who won the Betfair Chase?

Grey Dawning gained revenge for his defeat to Royale Pagaille 12 months before, by claiming a commanding victory over that same rival in the 2025 Betfair Chase.

Which horses will run in the 2025 Betfair Chase?

Grey Dawning may return to try and defend his crown at Haydock in 2026. Royale Pagaille will be a 12-year-old by then, but could still return for another attempt. Horses who impress in races like the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase, the National Hunt Chase, the Mildmay Novices' Chase, the Old Roan Chase and the Charlie Hall Chase, could travel to Haydock for a tilt at this Grade One prize.

Where is the Betfair Chase run?

The Betfair Chase is run at Haydock Park racecourse, situated in Merseyside, England.

Betfair Chase History

Registered as the Lancashire Chase, the Betfair Chase was first run at Haydock Park in 2005. Originally run over a trip of three miles, an extra furlong-and-a-half was added to the Betfair Chase distance in 2018, making it one of the sternest tests of stamina outside of handicap company.

The Betfair Chase is often the starting point for horses who hope to go on to compete in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

Paul Nicholls' legendary chaser, Kauto Star won the Betfair Chase four times between 2006 and 2011, while also winning the Gold Cup at Cheltenham twice in that space of time.

Colin Tizzard's star Cue Card became a fan's favourite, thanks mainly to his exploits at Haydock. Cue Card won the Betfair Chase on three occasions, while also claiming the King George crown at Kempton and the Ryanair at Cheltenham.

Silviniaco Conti won the Betfair Chase in 2012 and 2014, making Paul Nicholls the most successful trainer in the race, having saddled the winner six times.

Bristol De Mai became the third horse to win back-to-back Betfair Chases in 2017 and 2018. Nigel Twiston-Davies' grey also recorded the most emphatic Grade One victory ever seen in Britain in the 2017 Betfair Chase, beating Cue Card by a margin of 57-lengths on heavy ground.

Bristol De Mai was thwarted in his attempt to become the only horse to win the Betfair Chase three years in a row in 2019, as Colin Tizzard's Lostintranslation outstayed his rival down the long home-straight at Haydock to win by half-a-length.

Nigel Twiston-Davies' grey didn't have to wait long to gain revenge, as Bristol De Mai defeated Clan Des Obeaux and Lostintranslation to win his third Betfair Chase in 2020.
