2021 Celebration Chase Runners
Put The Kettle On was last seen collecting her second Cheltenham Festival trophy, having upstaged Chacun Pour Soi to win the Champion Chase. Henry De Bromhead's mare was passed by the favourite turning in, but reclaimed her lead in the final 100 yards, and held off the charging Nube Negra to claim victory.
Less than four lengths separated the first five across the line in the Champion Chase. Greaneteen finished fourth, having travelled well into the race, before getting a little outmuscled on the run to the line.
Sceau Royal had his momentum checked badly by the fading Rouge Vif as the field came down the hill at Cheltenham. Although he recovered well enough to be in contention jumping the last, that issue prevented Alan King's star chaser from mounting a serious challenge.
Nuts Well won the Old Roan at the start of the season, and ran a cracker to place second behind the peerless Fakir D'Oudairies in the Melling Chase last time out. Ann Hamilton's ten-year-old has won three of his last four starts over two-and-a-half miles, but has only won two of his last ten starts over the minimum distance, and I can't see Nuts Well having the pace to get involved.
Ornua joins stablemate Put The Kettle On in the field, but Rachael Blackmore's mount hasn't been in the best of form this season. Dolos is the outsider of the pack. Harry Cobden has chosen to ride Dolos over Greaneteen, which seems a very strange decision, considering the disparity in form and odds.
2021 Celebration Chase Verdict
The joker in the pack at Sandown is ALTIOR, who's only run once so far this season. Nicky Henderson's eleven-year-old may be on the decline, but he still looks the best value bet in this race at 3/1.
Altior's rating dropped below the 170 mark for the first time since 2018, following that defeat in the Desert Orchid Chase. Henderson's eleven-year-old jumped and travelled poorly that day, and was clearly in need of the run, as he crossed the line a tired horse. Altior was, however, giving six pounds to Nube Negra, and the winner went on to prove he was no mug by finishing a half-length runner-up in the Queen Mother, so Altior's performance clearly wasn't as bad as people were making out.
It's easy to forget - given he's only run three times in the last two season and been defeated twice - that Altior is one of the greatest two-mile chasers we've ever seen.
A four-time Cheltenham Festival winner. Unbeaten on his first 19 starts over obstacles. Five from five here at Sandown, and winner of the last three renewals of the Celebration Chase.
Nicky Henderson's horses haven't been firing on all cylinders this season, and Altior has clearly had problems. Yet, if he can roll back the years and produce the sort of performance he was capable of at his peak, then that Altior would eat this lot for breakfast.
Verdict
Altior remains one of the highest-rated horses in training. If anywhere near his best, he should be able to win his third Celebration Chase, and he looks the best value bet at 3/1.
