2024 Futurity Trophy Tips - Harrington's raider can claim final Group One
The 2024 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster presents an exciting race with promising two-year-olds like Wimbledon Hawkeye, Delacroix, and Hotazhell. Wimbledon Hawkeye currently leads the odds after a strong showing at the Royal Lodge Stakes. Delacroix poses a threat with a recent win in the Autumn Stakes. Hotazhell, fresh from a victory in the Beresford Stakes, represents a significant each-way betting opportunity at 11/2. Given the track record of Beresford winners achieving Group One success, Hotazhell stands out as a strong contender for this event.

Winners of this quality race often go on to run in next season's Classics. In the last decade alone, we've seen Futurity Trophy winners follow up in the 2000 Guineas, Irish 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and even the St Leger.

2024 Futurity Trophy Runners
Leading the way in the betting for Saturday's feature is James Owen's Wimbledon Hawkeye, who built on a runner-up finish to The Lion In Winter in the Acomb Stakes by landing the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket. Aidan O'Brien's Delacroix will also step up into Group One company, having scored in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket two weeks ago.
John and Thady Gosden will be represented by Detain, who is two-from-two on the all-weather at Kempton. Jessica Harrington, meanwhile, hands Hotazhell his British debut, following an impressive win in the Group Two Beresford Stakes.
Charlie Appleby and William Buick team up with the unbeaten Anno Domini. Royal Playwright will renew rivalries with Wimbledon Hawkeye, having finished second to the favourite in the Royal Lodge. Hollie Doyle rides the once-raced Nebras for owner Imad Alsagar. Paul and Oliver Cole run Seaplane, after he broke his duck with an emphatic maiden win at Newmarket.
2024 Futurity Trophy Tips
This is tricky. Very tricky. Plenty are entitled to fancy their chances. Detain and Anno Domini do bring some useful form to the table. However, jumping from novice races straight into this Group One isn't a path that has worked out particularly well. Generally, it's battle-hardened colts with pattern-race experience that come out on top.
I can't knock Wimbledon Hawkeye, who was much the best in the Royal Lodge. Saying that, Royal Playwright was coming back at the winner in the closing stages of that Group Two, where he seemed to relish the softer ground. At 14/1, he's the most interesting each-way proposition in the contest.
Delacroix won the Autumn Stakes a shade cosily and he could get backed into favouritism ahead of Wimbledon Hawkeye. The second Irish raider in the field is HOTAZHELL (11/2), and I feel like his victory in the Beresford Stakes is being undervalued by the bookmakers.
The betting ring went wild ahead of that Group Two. Money came for Windlord, Trinity College and Hotazhell before the off, with most anticipating a close contest. Tennessee Stud took over from the front-running Trinity College with two furlongs to travel and looked to have gained the upperhand over Hotazhell, who was already being scrubbed along. Yet, Shane Foley's mount responded to pressure well, wrestling the lead from Tennessee Stud before pulling a length clear in the final 100 yards.
A winner of the Tyros Stakes back in July, Hotazhell then finished a close second to Henri Matisse in the Futurity Stakes, where future Group One winner Scorthy Champ crossed the line third. Winners of the Beresford Stakes have a habit of going on to win Group Ones. True, most of those are trained by Aidan O'Brien, but Jessica Harrington is no stranger to top-level success on the flat and she immediately earmarked the Futurity Trophy as the target for Hotazhell after the Beresford. She clearly holds him in high regard.
