2024 Tingle Creek Chase News - Quotes From Connections
Nicky Henderson (Jonbon)
We went the Shloer and Tingle Creek route last season and they come on top of each other a bit quickly, but the race would have brought him on nicely and it's put him in the perfect place.
He jumped very well at Cheltenham – in fact it's the best I've seen him jump. He's in brilliant form and we couldn't be happier with him. He's enjoyed it at Sandown every time he's been there and you have to be confident he will do so again. It seems to bring out the best in him and he's always liked the jumping test.
He enjoys his racing. He's a very enthusiastic boy and we hope there's still even more improvement to come. He's been very consistent and keeps on proving he's a genuine two-miler. We know he'll get further if you want him to, but there's no need to switch at the moment. If this goes well, we're looking at the Clarence House Chase next and will be hoping he makes it to Cheltenham this time.
Henry De Bromhead (Quilixios)
I was very happy with the performance at Naas. He jumped great and galloped right to the line, so it was great to see him back. The Tingle Creek is a famous race and we would love to win it again. Obviously Jonbon is very good and is going to be very hard to beat but at least we'll know where we stand for the rest of the season.
He's got good form on every sort of ground. I was probably a little bit concerned about the better ground for him at Naas, but he seemed to handle that well and he won a good race at Naas in January on very testing ground, so he's pretty adaptable.
Captain Guinness is all about speed and can often struggle at Leopardstown to get home over the two miles and one furlong, whereas Quilixios is more of a staying two-miler. I'm not saying he's Sizing Europe, but Sizing Europe was like that – a high cruising speed and a real stayer over the trip.
Alan King (Edwardstone)
Edwardstone will be 11 on New Year’s Day, but his enthusiasm and work at home has been as good as its ever been.
I was delighted with his comeback run behind Jonbon in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last month, and he took a bit of a blow going to the last fence, which suggests that he might come on for the run.
No doubt, Jonbon will improve as well, but Edwardstone was less than three lengths behind him in this race last year, and there has never been much between the pair.
Edwardstone won the Tingle Creek in 2022 and it’s one of my favourite steeplechases. Obviously, I’d love to win it again, but, while Jonbon is a worthy odds-on favourite, I have seen no reason at home not to run, and if I opted out where else would I go?
Harry Fry (Boothill)
He’s come out of the Shloer Chase in really good form and we were delighted with his run.
He deserves to take his chance at Sandown, albeit we’re going to be coming up against Jonbon and Edwardstone for sure and if Jonbon turns up and runs his race, he’s going to be very hard to beat.
We deserve to be in there pitching, so we’ll throw our hat in the ring and you never know. One day one might go his way.
Joe Tizzard (JPR One)
He’s good, he’s come out of it really well. I was delighted with that race and he’s ready to go again.
We just prepared the horse and backed ourselves to get him ready first time out in that one, and hopefully he is seriously on the upgrade.
On official ratings, he’s still 16lb below Jonbon so it is whether I go and run him in another handicap and creep my way up through or I go and have a crack at it now and see where we are.
Nigel Twiston-Davies (Master Chewy)
He’s been very consistent and we feel he will step forward massively for his reappearance and be suited by softer ground.
He has the sort of rating where he either carries topweight in a handicap or gives it a go in a Grade 1. He was running very well in the Arkle when he fell and was a good second in a good renewal of the Grade 1 at Aintree, so we feel he deserves a crack at this.
Joseph O'Brien (Solness)
He's pretty durable and has won over hurdles and fences this season. He'll continue to mix and match and we'll try to find places where he can make some money over the season. He just doesn't like when the ground is too soft. He's pretty straightforward but he likes to be ridden positively.
A fast-run two miles with an emphasis on jumping suits him well and that's what he'll get at the weekend. He ran well in a Grade 2 at Navan last time and he's earned a crack at this.
