Two of National Hunt racing's best two-mile chasers met for the first time in Saturday's Clarence House Chase.

Jonbon entered Saturday's feature as the odds-on favourite. Nicky Henderson's star added another Shloer Chase and Tingle Creek to his superb resume earlier in the season and was aiming to cement his position at the head of the market for the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Two-time Champion Chaser, Energumene was making his third appearance in the Clarence House Chase. Willie Mullins' 11-year-old was beaten in his first two tilts at this Grade One, but travelled to Ascot on the back of a victory over Banbridge in the Hilly Way Chase - which was his first appearance on a racetrack for 18 months.

Just two runners were entered against the market leaders at Ascot. Edwardstone had followed Jonbon home on five occasions since the last of his three Grade One victories. Boothill, a three-time winner around Ascot, also had plenty to find on Jonbon from the meetings over the past 12 months.

Nico De Boinville has been keen to make use of Jonbon's speed this season and allowed the favourite to go straight to the front. Energumene jumped the opening flight alongside his market rival, with Edwardstone and Boothill sitting a few lengths off the top two.

Passing the stands for the first time, De Boinville had a tight grip on the reigns, not wanting his mount to use too much energy early in the contest. The first jumping mistake came from Boothill, who hit the fourth flight and was bustled along for a stride or two.

Jonbon was jumping slightly out to his left, but still held a comfortable lead going into Swinley Bottom. Paul Townend rode Energumene into the eighth flight and the two-time Champion Chaser jumped it well to go within half a length of the favourite.

On the turn for home, De Boinville asked the favourite to turn on the taps. Energumene kept tabs with Jonbon for as long as he could, but Willie Mullins' raider got in tight to the second-last, allowing the leader to extend his advantage.

Between the final two flights, Jonbon opened up a five length advantage. A spring-heeled leap at the last brought the crowd at Ascot to their feet and De Boinville saluted the stands as Jonbon sealed his ninth Grade One win.

Energumene didn't have the gears to match Jonbon on this occasion, but finished his race well enough to place second ahead of Edwardstone, who ran well for Alan King and Tom Cannon. Boothill crossed the line fourth and last, some 20 lengths behind the runaway winner.

A 9/4 shot with most firms before the race, bet365 cut Jonbon into 11/10 favouritism for the 2025 Champion Chase. Energumene drifted out to 7/1 to win his third Champion Chase, with Edwardstone available at 50s.
