The biggest event in Scottish National Hunt racing takes place on Saturday, as a talented field of chasers takes part in the Scottish Grand National. First held in 1867, this grueling four-mile chase was originally held at Bogside racecourse, but was moved to Ayr after Bogside closed in 1965.

Kitty's Light will attempt to become the first six-year-old since Earth Summit to win the Scottish National. Nigel Twiston-Davies' future Grand National winner carried just 10-00 to victory in 1994 and remains the only six-year-old to have won for the best part of a century. Kitty's Light could have as much as 11-8 to lumber around Ayr - a huge ask for such a young horse.

Christian Williams could also be represented by Win My Wings, who was given an eight-pound rating hike after winning the Eider Chase. Peter Fahey's raider, History Of Fashion made an early exit when fancied in the Eider, but returned to form with a fine third in a £30k handicap at Navan last time out.

Ashtown Lad is a staying chaser to follow next season. Major Dundee is even less experienced than Ashtown Lad, having run in just three chase races. Both clearly have plenty of potential, but it would be a huge ask for horses with such little experience to win a race as grueling as this.

2022 Scottish Grand National Tip 1 - The Ferry Master

I'm keen on the chances of THE FERRY MASTER, who finished fourth in this race 12 months ago. Entering the straight, Sandy Thomson's charge moved clear of the chasing pack alongside stablemate Dingo Dollar. That early move came back to haunt The Ferry Master, as he weakened in the final few furlongs and was eventually beaten by seven lengths.

This season, Thomson's nine-year-old has finished third over three-and-a-half miles at Musselburgh, fifth in the Rehearsal Chase and fourth down over 19-furlongs at Wetherby. The Ferry Master was much better at Newcastle last time out, though, where he was only beaten a neck by Geryville in a tactical three-runner affair.

Although the handicapper has given him an extra two pounds for that runner-up effort, Ryan Mania's mount returns to Ayr five pounds lower in the handicap. Mania is a former Grand National winner and has won three times aboard Sandy Thomson's contender, and he'll make they don't hit the front too soon this time around. 12/1 looks like a nice price for an ante-post punt.

At Chepstow's seasonal opener in October, current favourite Kitty's Light was beaten in the Native River Handicap Chase by CHIRICO VALLIS. Richie McLernon's mount made all that day and battled back gamely to repel Kitty's Light on the run to the line.

The handicapper responded by throwing Chirico Vallis up to 135, the highest he's ever been rated over fences. Neil Mulholland's ten-year-old has since finished third off that mark in the Classic Chase at Warwick and a Veteran's Chase at Doncaster - both races taking place on soft ground which was unlikely to suit.

Chirico Vallis was only stepped up to three miles at the start of the season, a move that has produced the most consistent form of his career. After a quiet spell, Neil Mulholland has banged in a few winners during the build-up and I see no reason why Chirico Vallis can't round off a strong campaign with a solid performance in this year's Scottish National.
